JAMK University of Applied Sciences Degree Programme in Music is a distinguished Music Education facility in central Finland - city of Jyväskylä. Tha main goal of studies at JAMK is development of your musicianship and your skills of musical tutoring as well as your capacities to work in various types of projects within the culture industry. In addition you will advance your teaching skills with top of the class Finnish pedagogical studies and teacher training. (PISA 2009 results)

Bachelor's degree - Music Pedagogue

Content of Studies

Degree Programme in Music provides you with studies in both classical and pop/jazz music. All students in the degree programme will study their respective instruments, different styles of music, playing in various types of ensembles, and musical theory and history. All students will gain teacher qualification through pedagogical studies in the Teacher Education College. The precise content is determined by the orientation of your studies eg. classical or pop/jazz..

In addition to instrumental studies, your personal study plan may include, for example, early childhood music education, conducting, composition and arrangement. You can also choose studies from the offerings of orientations other than your own. In addition the music educational collaboration called Finnish Music Campus provides you with even more options. You may include courses in your studies from three music education institutes: JAMK Degree Programme in Music, Jyväskylä University Department of Music, Jyväskylä College Music and Dance Department.

Our provision also includes instruction in English in instrumental studies, ensemble playing, choir conducting and accompaniment – it is also possible to undertake the practical part of the studies in English. The pedagogical studies are also available in English.Our teaching staff is highly international so that tuition can be arranged in many other languages as well. Learn more about the teaching staff.

JAMK provides you with studies aimed to help you in working life after graduation. These studies include productization of your know-how, entrepreneur studies, development of educational environment etc..

Implementation of Studies

You will receive personal tutoring in your instrumental studies and in ensemble work. Other studies will be carried out in the form of learning tasks, lectures, group assignments and online studies. Music pedagogy training is mainly teacher training in music institutes. Performances, participation in projects and organization of various events are also typical examples of a music student's practical training opportunities.

The facilities of the Degree Programme in Music are located in the Jyväskylä Music Campus which also comprises Department of Music in the University of Jyväskylä and the Music and Dance Department of Jyväskylä College. The facilities have undergone a major renovation project and the facilities are in top shape. Substantial effort has been put on the acoustical condition of the premises.

Based on individual choice you can also apply for participation in our student exchange programme which, in addition to the Scandinavian countries, facilitates music studies in many European music academies (the Netherlands, Iceland, Great Britain, Italy, Lithuania, France, Romania, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and Estonia).

Admission Criteria and Application Procedures

You are applicable for admission if you have completed general upper secondary education, the matriculation examination or if you have a vocational qualification. If you will graduate during the spring in which you are submitting your application, please refer to your latest school certificate in your application.

Prior music studies undertaken in official schools of music are a prerequisite to studying in the Degree Programme in Music. This means that our students have already become accustomed to working on a long-term and goal-oriented basis before entering the degree programme.Due to the precondition of prior music studies, you will have to fill in the additional form of the Degree Programme in Music of JAMK as a pre-assignment during the joint application period.

Since Degree Programme in Music is not an official English degree programme, the application procedure has to be conducted in Finnish. If you wish to be a graduate student, you need to apply within the joint application period from March 5th to April 3rd 2012. The application has to be completed online www.amkhaku.fi in Finnish. Employment Prospects of Music Educators

The graduates from the Degree Programme in Music can work as versatile music educators and developers of music life in, for example, the following positions:

  • instrument teacher (classical and pop/jazz)
  • music instructor (classical and pop/jazz)
  • early childhood music teacher

The studies at JAMK also qualifies you to work as a musician due to the substantial instrumental studies. Studies at JAMK also provide a great basis for further studies.
