Study Guidance
The main aim of JAMK’s study guidance is to ensure a smooth progress of studies, to develop expertise, and to support professional growth. JAMK’s study guidance is divided into three sectors:
-
learning guidance
-
career guidance
-
self awareness guidance
For the description of the Guidance System, see the links below.
Learning Guidance
Learning guidance aims at providing pedagogic support to the students to help them make steady progress in their studies and to graduate in the standard study period. Learning guidance also helps students familiarise themselves with JAMK's study and other practices. Learning guidance is part of every teacher’s duties. At the beginning of each course, the teacher has the responsibility to explain how the students should study to reach the goals of the course and how the course supports their professional growth. If the students have learning difficulties, they are helped and supported by the study counsellors and the study psychologist.
One form of support is JAMK's accessible learning environment, which provides the students with equal opportunities to study regardless of their individual differences. This means that the students with learning difficulties, disabilities, or with different cultural or language background are supported to help them progress in their studies in a target-oriented way. For further information on the accessible learning environment, see the links below.
Career Guidance
At an early stage of their studies, the students prepare a Personal Learning Plan (PLP) which includes a Career plan and a Study plan. Based on the PLP they define the goals of their studies and the studies to be completed. In the various stages of the studies, the Career plan and the Study plan are complemented and defined in further detail. The students are responsible for monitoring and completing their studies, but they are supported in different ways during their studies. The professional goals of each student are reviewed and defined in further detail in an annual counselling dialogue with the career tutor.
Self Awareness Guidance
For many students, the time of studying in a higher education institution is the time of learning how to lead an independent life. The aim of studying is to develop independent and critical thinking. These processes may raise issues in which students need support. Every student has the right to personal, confidential guidance discussions with a peer tutor, career tutor, study counsellor or study psychologist. The aim of these discussions is to analyse the student’s goals, wishes and possibilities. In social and health issues, also the services provided by the City of Jyväskylä are available to the students.
