Practical Information for International Degree Students
Before Arrival
Residence Permit
Students from the EU member states, Nordic Countries, Liechtenstein and Switzerland don’t need to have a visa nor residence permit. They do need to register with the local police to have the right of residence if their stay in Finland lasts longer than 3 months. Students coming from Nordic countries register at a Register Office (Yliopistonkatu 28) and present the Inter-Nordic Migration Form.
Students outside EU or EEA need to apply for a residence permit before leaving for Finland and it is recommended to do so without delay at the nearest Finnish consulate or embassy after getting the notice of acceptance .
Please note! The precondition for obtaining a residence permit is that the student has valid health insurance coverage with a reliable and solvent company or institution. Further information can be found on the website of the Finnish Immigration Service.
Health Services and Insurance
Finnish higher education institutions (both Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences) are currently in the process of trying to create a suitable insurance package that would provide coverage at a reasonable price and as comprehensive as possible for your needs while you are studying in Finland. Unfortunately it is not ready yet but we are hoping that it will be by late June. If you will be applying for your permit before the insurance package is available, then you will have to get your insurance from another supplier. For more information about international student health insurance availability, please go to www.studyinfinland.fi/healthinsurance.
See further information on insurance coverage and health insurance and services.
Accommodation
Remember to arrange housing before arriving in Finland. Please see further information on housing possibilities.
Cost of Living
As you are planning on studying in Finland it is important that you are aware of the costs concerning the daily living. Check our Study Guide - Cost of Living to get an idea of how much it costs to live in Finland.
General Information on Finland and Jyväskylä
Funding Your Studies
The tuition is provided free of charge, but all students have to buy books and other educational material themselves as well as take care of their own living costs. JAMK University of Applied Sciences cannot offer financial assistance, scholarships or offer job opportunities for students. Therefore, students are encouraged to apply for financial support in their home country. Please note that international students are usually not eligible for the Finnish state grant, as their residence in Finland is not considered permanent. Further information at www.kela.fi /english.
Services for Foreign Students
To support your stay in Jyväskylä we provide versatile services, including tutoring, orientation and Friend Family programme. See further information on services for foreign students.
