Who is an Exchange Student?

Prospective exchange students are advised to contact their home institution’s International Coordinator or International Office to find out whether a co-operation agreement has been concluded between the home institution and JAMK.

Exchange students apply for specific exchange programmes such as Erasmus and Nordplus. They typically attend JAMK for short periods lasting from one week to a year (Erasmus exchange being between 3 and 12 months) and return to their home institutions after the exchange period. They are enrolled at their home institutions and do not have to meet the general admission requirements of JAMK. Instead, they have to provide sufficient evidence of their academic background and proficiency in English, as the language of study for exchange students is English.

The students can apply to JAMK to study for one or two semesters and afterwards they can transfer the credits obtained to their home institution. The exchange coordinator of their home institution administrates the exchange process.

Students can also apply independently as ‘free movers’, referring to students who do not participate in the official student exchange programmes. Depending on the resources and number of applicants from our official partner institutions, free mover applications can also be considered. However, in competitive situations preference is usually given to applicants from our partner institutions (i.e. institutions of higher education with which we have an agreement).
