People from All Over the World
David Rouquette
I am a second year student at JAMK University of Applied Sciences and I come from Southern France. I completed the first year of my studies at Open Studies. It gave me the time to make sure that this field is my speciality.
On the campus you can meet people from all over the world; globalization is present every day. In the classroom about half of the students are Finnish and half from abroad. It has also been nice to have guest lecturers from other countries and cultures.
The courses are interesting and challenging. In France education is more formal; here you can feel the mutual respect between the staff and the students. Communication is casual and the teachers are available. Teachers share their experiences of working life, their knowledge is constantly updated, and teaching is geared toward working life.
Jyväskylä is a very nice city with a modern infrastructure and a functional transport system. The size of the city is good – it is fairly small, but you can find all the facilities of a big city. Nature is close and there are many opportunities for outdoor activities. Biking opportunities are particularly well organized. In the winter it is fun to skate on the lake. The city looks new and growing. It is a real student city and, as a foreigner, you can find people who speak English everywhere.
Finland seems like a flexible country that is always open to the outside world. Finnish technology is highly developed and it shows also in the studies. The climate is something you can survive - just keep yourself activated during the darkest winter months. Finns are a bit formal in the beginning, but once you get to know them, they are very loyal and have great values. I wish to stay in Finland after my studies. I hope to find a job where I could put my studies and international experience to use; I think the companies would benefit from my competence as well.
Jyväskylä seems to have a strong spirit of entrepreneurship and an atmosphere that dares you to try your best!
