The Finnish Dual Model of Higher Education
The Finnish higher education system consists of two sectors: universities of applied sciences (also referred to as polytechnics) and universities. Their strong areas and profiles complement each other. Completing a bachelor's degree in Finland is free of charge for students.
Universities of applied sciences are oriented towards working life and offer education based on its requirements. Universities undertake scientific research and provide high education based on this research.
Practically Oriented University of Applied Sciences Education
Studying at the universities of applied sciences is more practically oriented than at traditional universities. A polytechnic first-cycle (Bachelor’s) degree can be completed in 3.5 – 4.5 years, either in Finnish or English.
The universities of applied sciences also provide second-cycle (Master’s) degrees, designed to enhance the competences of working professionals and respond to the demands of working life. These Master’s degrees are equivalent to university Master’s degrees.
Universities emphasise scientific research and education based on it. Universities, i.e. scientific or artistic higher education institutions, grant Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as Licentiate and Doctoral degrees, which are scientific postgraduate degrees.
Research at Higher Education Institutions
Finnish universities of applied sciences have close contacts with trade and industry through their research and development collaboration. Both universities and universities of applied sciences are active in their efforts to deploy their research and competences culturally and socially.
While universities focus on scientific basic research, R&D at the universities of applied sciences is, in particular, aimed at promoting regional innovation activity. The development of research activity emphasises high-quality, internationally competitive, ethically sustainable research.
