Outgoing student exchange to Korea during the academic year 2013-2014

JAMK has approved students for exchange to South-Korean partner institutions for the academic year 2013-2014. The tense situation between the Koreas has been acknowledged and the students have been advised to follow the travel announcements by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland. Should the Ministry issue an announcement advising to avoid travelling to South-Korea, the planned exchanges will be cancelled.

At the moment such travel announcement has not been issued. Furthermore, partner institutions in South-Korea have reported the atmosphere to be calm and promised to keep JAMK and the students up to date concerning the development of the situation.
Based on this information, the exchanges have not been cancelled on the part of JAMK. However, the students have been given the opportunity to cancel their planned exchanges and to apply to other partner institutions e.g. in Europe.

JAMK gets quality label

JAMK University of Applied Sciences is the first higher education institution to pass the international audit of the Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC) in the second round of audits. The audit was conducted in English by an international audit team. As a result of the audit, JAMK was given a quality label that is valid for six years.

The quality label is a recognition of JAMK's long-term and persistent work in developing quality, and at the same time it is an indication of JAMK's capacity to function as part of the European Higher Education Area. The quality system of JAMK University of Applied Sciences fulfils the national criteria set for the quality management of higher education institutions, and the system corresponds to the European quality assurance principles and recommendations for higher education institutions.

The audit involved the Bachelor's Degree Programme in Business Administration and the Master's Degree Programme in Entrepreneurship and Business Competence, as well as the English-language Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Logistics Engineering. All of the business education programmes at JAMK University of Applied Sciences have been evaluated within a year, and they have met the international quality criteria. Last spring the English-language Bachelor’s Degree Programme in International Business received the international EPAS accreditation.

FINHEEC notes in its press release that the strengths of the JAMK quality system include a strong connection to strategy, a strong commitment by management and staff, and strategic planning that is organised in a systematic and structured way. Among its recommendations for development targets FINHEEC recommended that JAMK should embed international systemic benchmarking and peer review as well as more developed analysis methods for analysing performance data.

The purpose of the audits is to support the quality work of higher education institutions and to spotlight the level of the quality management systems of Finnish higher education institutions. The Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council has implemented audits on higher education institutions since 2005. A second round of audits was launched in 2012. So far, JAMK has been the only Finnish higher education institution to commission an international group to conduct its audit. The JAMK audit group had members from four European countries: Ireland, Norway, Austria, and Finland.

Health care books are being transferred in Main Library

The books in the Scirpta Hall will be moved to the Stage. Their location will be changing too: after the transfer the location of the books is 61–618. The old location 59–59.8 will be out of service.

Because the transfer can´t be done in one day the books are in many places at the same time. The staff is happy to help you if you can´t find the books you are looking for.

Short loans are embedded in the course book collection

Short loans´ location has changed in the Main Library. They are now among the course books, not in their own unity. For example short loan “Principles of Marketing” is in the same place where the actual course book is. Short loans are easy to recognize: there is red tape and a sign “Ref K” in the spine of the book.

We are updating the signposts of the shelves. If you can´t find the book you are looking for you can always ask help from the library staff.

Elmo dashboard available for students

Elmo dashboard became available for students on 10 January 2013. On the dashboard, you can find all the latest updated information about your studies. You will be able to check your information wherever and whenever you want, as long as there is a user terminal and a network connection available. You can also adjust the dashboard to your needs.

Elmo is developed by stages. At present, the Elmo dashboard offers the following:

A study widget, where you can view courses, schedules, and the studies you have completed. Your information comes directly from the ASIO student management system.
A calendar, which also functions as your schedule, containing information about your courses and rooms.
Tasks: you can transfer tasks from Outlook to your Elmo dashboard.
News: all the latest news for students from JAMK and JAMKO.
RSS feed: you can bring the content you need to your Elmo dashboard.

And this is not all! In future, the Elmo dashboard will offer even more functions with the added feature of Elmo workspace.

Elmo grows and develops

Transition to Elmo does not happen overnight, but by stages. Elmo will also continue to introduce new features.

In addition to the dashboard, Elmo also offers workspace feature (SharePoint), which will be brought into use step by step.

FYI for lecturers and students planning study tours/short-term studies abroad during spring 2013:
application period for grants open 1.1. – 31.1.2013

To cover some expenses of the study tours/short-term studies abroad (lasting 5-29 days) the students have a possibility to apply for a grant from JAMK University of Applied Sciences, International Services. Short-term studies abroad can be e.g. group study tour or individual student’s Summer School or language course abroad. In the academic year 2012-2013 the grant is 100 euros/student.

Conditions for awarding the grant

The credits completed during the period abroad are credited to the student's degree in JAMK (e.g. a study tour which is a planned part of some course at JAMK.).
The student has a possibility to get a grant from International Services of JAMK for a short-term studies abroad once during the Bachelor's degree studies and once during the Master's degree studies.
A short-term study period abroad must be applied for in the ASIO system (Student Exchange Application Form and Report) during the application period.
The period abroad has to last at least 5 days

Application Periods

1.1. – 31.1.2013: For the short-term studies abroad taking place in the same spring or the next academic year
1.5. – 30.5.2013: Additional application period for Summer Schools
1.9. – 30.9. 2013: Additional application period for the short-term studies abroad taking place in the same autumn or next spring

Application Procedure

If several students from the same degree programme are heading for the same study tour, in addition to the ASIO electronic application they are required to fill in together a form “Agreement for outgoing study groups/study tours”. The form should include information of all the students leaving for the study tour. Lecturer in charge of the study tour has to sign the form to confirm that the study tour is a planned part of the course. The grant for all the students is applied in the same form.

In case of an individual student applying for a 5-29 days lasting short-term studies abroad, in addition to the ASIO electronic application, the student is required to fill in study plan (Learning Agreement) of the studies to be completed abroad. The grant is to be applied with a separate form.

The application period for JAMK is now open

The application period for Bachelor’ Degree Programmes conducted in English and for the JAMK’s Teacher Education College started on Monday 7th of January. We offer three Bachelor’ Degree Programmes conducted in English: International Business, Nursing and Logistics Engineering, in total there are 120 study places available.

The atmosphere is truly international! About half of the students studying in the degree programmes conducted in English come from abroad. In total there are students from 80 different countries at JAMK. In addition to professional expertise the students will develop their language skills and learn how to function in a multicultural environment.

The education in the Degree Programme in Nursing is highly esteemed and meets the strict quality requirements set in the EU legislation - A Bachelor of Health Care is a Registered Nurse. Logistic engineering studies prepare you for international careers in logistics within industry, trade and service management. International Business takes a hands-on approach to training professionals for international careers and offers specialization options, for example, in Music and Media Management and Tourism and Hospitality Management. The studies in the degree programmes conducted in English consist of 210-240 ECTS credits, which is 3,5-4 years.

The application period for the Teacher Education College is 7–25 January 2013, the study options are Vocational Teacher Education, Study Counsellor or Vocational Special Needs Teacher Education. In total there 450 study places available.

The student selection for JAMK’s Master’s Degree Programme in Information Technology (instruction in English) has been completed

Altogether 107 applicants applied to Master’s degree programme in Information Technology (cyber security). The intake was 20 students.

The list of admitted students (pdf) includes the names of the successful applicants who have given permission to publish their names.

In case of cancellations, applicants placed on the waiting list will be notified about their admission. All applicants will be notified about the selection by post during week 48.

JAMK's Juha Perälampi was awarded for promotion of entrepreneurship

The Finnish Entrepreneurship and Innovation Network for Higher Education FINPIN awarded for the seventh time the distinguished promoters of entrepreneurship and structures within the scope of Universities of Applied Sciences as well as entrepreneurs graduated from the University of Applied Sciences.

A Senior Lecturer of the School of Business and Services Management of JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Juha Perälampi was awarded on the following basis: "Juha Perälampi is an international and dynamic entrepreneurial leader. He is always ready to share his expertise and competence by providing his full contribution to development of education, training, and industry cooperation. Also student feedback about him has been excellent."

It was also noted that the study in multicultural environments has brought an international perspective to the work of Mr. Perälampi. With his own example, he has emphasized in his coaching the value of contacting the customer, presentation, language and culture skills as well as negotiation skills.

“The award granted to Juha Perälampi is valued recognition of the long-term efforts that have been made by JAMK University of Applied Sciences for promotion of university based entrepreneurship. This is a significant step towards Building the Entrepreneurial University at JAMK, an objective we have set in our strategy,” says the Rector of JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Jussi Halttunen.

Mr. Perälampi works at JAMK University of Applied Sciences as the Head of the JAMK-Business Incubator, a business coach and Senior Lecturer in International Business.

The Finnish Entrepreneurship and Innovation Network for Higher Education FINPIN has been operating since 2002, uniting operators fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in Finland. The network is maintained by Lahti University of Applied Sciences.

JAMK University of Applied Sciences arranges the annual international conference of European Association for Practitioner Research on Improving Learning (EAPRIL) organization in Jyväskylä on November 28-30, 2012. Theme of the 2012 conference is Creating Competences through Innovation in Learning and Development. EAPRIL is unique by bringing together those interested in the crossroads between research and practice and between professional learning and education.

Interaction is a keyword at the EAPRIL Conference. To stimulate this interaction the EAPRIL conference makes use of some very interactive presentation formats such as workshops, creative sessions and thematic roundtables. Juha Perälampi representing JAMK UAS at Stanford University

The manager of JAMK-Business Incubator, Senior Lecturer Juha Perälampi, will make an appearance at an exceptional international conference hosted by Stanford University entitled “Building the Entrepreneurial University”, where the focus will be on entrepreneurship and innovation. The participants at the conference will include representatives of universities and business, entrepreneurs, mentors, venture capitalists and policymakers from all over the world. Mr. Perälampi shall take the floor twice, where he will firstly discuss the Nordic welfare model and the opportunities and threats it creates regarding entrepreneurship. In his second speech, he will present the JAMK-Business Incubator and JAMK University of Applied Sciences’ growth towards an entrepreneurial university. Juha Perälampi will be the only principal speaker at the whole conference to represent a non-US organisation.

“It is an honor to represent JAMK and Finland at such a high-level event”, says Juha Perälampi, who has also served as the conference’s Nordic coordinator since August.

The participants at the conference shall hear the experiences of the most acclaimed US universities on how to nurture entrepreneurship – Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Berkeley University, University of Southern California and Arizona State University are also involved, among Stanford University and others.

Other speakers at the event include, for example, Prof. Henry Etzkowitz, Senior Researcher, Stanford University, and Marina Ranga, Senior Researcher, Stanford, H-STAR Institute. “We’ve already held initial talks about post-conference research cooperation with them,” Perälampi says.

The conference will be held November 12-16, 2012 at Stanford University, California.

JAMK University of Applied Sciences and Savonia University of Applied Sciences sign cooperation agreement

JAMK University of Applied Sciences and Savonia University of Applied Sciences have signed a cooperation agreement for the years 2013-2016. The agreement was approved by a meeting of the Academic Board at Savonia University on 18/09/2012. The JAMK Academic Board approved the agreement in its meeting in August.

The cooperation’s objective is to increase collaboration between universities and to create a joint approach for developing selected activities. Such activities include, among other things:
• organising training by predicting and reforming regional needs thanks to the creation of new opportunities for students and the region’s business community
• internalising education and developing international networks
• creating new collaborations for strengthening international research, development and
innovation activities (RDI)
• developing and benchmarking the organisations’ activities, as well as increasing the quality and effectiveness of education and RDI activities.

The cooperation agreement is in accordance with the strategies of both Universities of Applied Sciences and supports the goals of the higher education institutions’ internationality, education and RDI activities. The agreement will complement the organisations’ already existing cooperation models and agreements. JAMK will continue to collaborate with Tampere University of Applied Sciences in the JyTa consortium, and Savonia University of Applied Sciences will continue its ISAT partnership with North Karelia University of Applied Sciences.

The Rector of JAMK, Jussi Halttunen, considers that the agreement will deliver new opportunities for satisfying the region’s needs even more broadly than before. On the other hand, Halttunen says that the agreement will also deliver new opportunities for international activities.

Savonia’s Rector, Veli-Matti Tolppi, agrees with the Halttunen’s vision in terms of the cooperation’s benefits. In addition, Tolppi points out that both organisations have their clear strengths, and the high-level competence that is related to these can be shared between the organisations.

Altogether 42 applicants applied to Master’s degree programme in International Business Management. The intake was 15 students.

Business programme receives historic accreditation

The Bachelor’s Degree Programme in International Business at JAMK University of Applied Sciences (JAMK) has received a significant international honour. In its meeting on 30 May 2012, the Accreditation Board of European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) granted the Degree Programme in International Business the prestigious EPAS accreditation (EFMD Programme Accreditation System) for three years. The accreditation received by the programme marks the first time in EFMD’s history that such an honour has been given to a Finnish bachelor’s level programme in university of applied sciences.

The prerequisites for accreditation are high content and qualitative requirements that promote international management education. Earlier recipients of this accreditation in Finland are degree programmes at Turku School of Economics, University of Vaasa and Lappeenranta University of Technology. “This is an important testimony to the quality and successful processes of our Degree Programme in International Business. It also pays credit to the international business education produced at JAMK, the competitiveness of which is continuously being developed to better meet the ever-changing needs of the global operating environment. The accreditation is also an important sign that the Finnish education at university of applied sciences is respected internationally,” says a delighted Asta Wahlgrén, the Director of Unit, School of Business and Services Management at JAMK.

A major, multi-stage effort

EPAS accreditation for a degree programme requires strong internationalisation, modern educational content, proven applied research, genuine corporate co-operation, and a high level of quality assurance. The strict, multi-phase process typically lasts 1.5-2 years. The EFMD membership needed during the initial phase of the process already requires recommendations from accredited universities. After membership is approved, competency to begin the actual accreditation process is evaluated. “The process involves a careful assessment of the entire programme, its position within the university, design, delivery and, in particular, the outcomes,” explains Matti Hirsilä, the Head of Department responsible for the programme.

The EPAS accreditation process was initiated in 2009 by the Senior Lecturer, International Affairs Coordinator of JAMK’s School of Business and Services Management Risto Korkia-Aho, who had already paved the way for it in dozens of meetings, negotiations and paper presentations at EAIE, QSAPPLE, APAIE and NAFSA conferences. In the academic year of 2011-2012, the School of Business and Services Management was ready to compile a critical self-evaluation report. Based on this report, an international assessment group appointed by EFMD decided to carry out an evaluation visit to JAMK in April 2012. The two-day visit involved a process that included management, staff and student interviews as well as the participation of programme alumni and corporate partners. The assessment group was made up of academic experts and business representatives.

“This highly appreciated international accreditation recognition sends a message about the reliability and high quality education of our university of applied sciences. Competition in the university world has led to a situation in which an increasing number of accredited universities co-operate and form partnerships only with other accredited institutes. Thus, EPAS accreditation means that in the future we will have better opportunities to co-operate with respected universities. Accreditation of the degree programme also increases appreciation for the programme among applicants and students,” outlines Hirsilä.

The accreditation group made particular mention of the international nature of the degree programme. The dynamic and close corporate partner network also impressed the assessment group with its good working life connections and genuine desire to co-operate with the degree programme and its students. Placement of the alumni graduating from the programme in international positions also exceeded expectations. “The accreditation process gave us an excellent opportunity to measure the functionality of our processes and to take a closer look at the assessment of the quality and international competitiveness of our education and development work. This is good starting point for further development of activities. We are very satisfied with the end result,” adds Hirsilä.

Student selection for bachelor’s degree programmes with instruction in English, starting in the autumn of 2012

The student selection for JAMK's bachelor’s degree programmes conducted in English has been completed. The total number of first-preference applicants to these programmes was 1417, and student intake was 200.

The list of admitted students includes the names of the successful applicants who have given permission to publish their names. In case of cancellations, the applicants placed on the waiting list will be immediately notified about their admission.

All the applicants will be notified about the selection by mail during weeks 22-23.

The students will start their studies on 27 August 2012 with a language and culture orientation.

There will be additional intake to Logistics Engineering. Application time will be 1 June – 11 July 2012 4.15 pm at our website jamk.fi. Entrance examination will be 23 July 2012 at 9.45 a.m. in Jyväskylä, Finland. Results are announced after 30 of July.

JAMK’s audit visit in November

Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC) and JAMK University of Applied Sciences (JAMK) made an agreement in February on quality system audit. The agreement was signed by Helka Kekälainen from FINHEEC and Jussi Halttunen from JAMK.

The focus of the audit will be JAMK’s quality system, three degree programmes and one optional target. Two of the degree programmes are decided by JAMK and the third one will be decided by the audit team. The two programmes chosen by JAMK are Logistics Engineering (Bachelor’s Degree Programme) and Entrepreneurship and Business Competence (Master’s Degree Programme). The optional target is Entrepreneurship.

The audit will be carried out 13-15 November 2012 in English and according to FINHEEC’s audit manual (Audit manual for the quality systems of higher education institutions 2011–2017).

FINNIPS network on Baltic Tour: Come and hear more about JAMK's education!

Finnish Network for International Programmes (FINNIPS) is a coalition of 22 Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences. These Universities of Applied Sciences offer altogether 70 Bachelor's Degree Programmes that are conducted in English. In the spring 2012 FINNIPS will arrange entrance examinations for these programmes in 17 countries outside of Finland. Altogether 113 applicants applied to Master’s Degree Programmes of Information Technology and International Business Management. The combined intake was 35 students.

The list of admitted students (pdf. 73.3 KB) includes the names of the successful applicants who have given permission to publish their names. In case of cancellations, the applicants placed on the waiting list will be immediately notified about their admission.
All applicants will be notified about the selection by post during week 25.

Student selection for bachelor’s degree programmes with instruction in English, starting in the autumn of 2011

The student selection for JAMK's bachelor’s degree programmes conducted in English has been completed. The total number of first-preference applicants to these programmes was 1 587, and student intake was 210.

The list of admitted students includes the names of the successful applicants who have given permission to publish their names. In case of cancellations, the applicants placed on the waiting list will be immediately notified about their admission.

All the applicants will be notified about the selection by mail during weeks 22-23.

The students will start their studies on 22 August 2011 with a language and culture orientation.

There will be additional intake to Logistics Engineering. Application time will be 1 June – 15 July 2011 4.15 pm at our website jamk.fi. Entrance examination will be only 22 July 2011 at 9.45 a.m. in Jyväskylä, Finland.

An electronic work desk under development for students

The development work for a student intranet and teamwork environment will be launched at JAMK. The overhaul is a part of an extensive development effort for web content management and will continue until 2013. Students and Student Union JAMKO will have a central role in the development work for web contents.

The main objective of the innovation is to create an easy-to-use electronic work desk for students. It gathers, as a single view on its own page, the up-to-date information and tools that the student needs. The aim with the new tools is to improve interaction among the students as well as between the students and the staff. Information discovery will be improved by building, in stages, a search function that covers the knowledge assets for an entire organization. If successful, the development work will make the students' daily work easier and improve students' communications.

During the spring, JAMK will also start systematic work to increase web presence. The jamk.fi site will be made even more user-friendly, and JAMK's role in social media will be defined. Also the InfoTV system will be overhauled in 2013 for all campuses.

Students hope for efficiency and interaction

A preliminary survey mapped out the development needs for the current web contents management. The participants included students, staff and stakeholder representatives. The board of JAMKO was interviewed in December 2010. In addition, the representatives of the student union participated in workshops.

The biggest deficiencies at the moment are the lack of a student intranet and the lack of a teamwork environment. The students find the dispersion of knowledge to several systems as challenging. The development work aims to meet these needs.
The preliminary survey that maps the development needs of JAMK's web content management is part of the SIKE content development endeavour.

Internationally important heating boiler testing laboratory opened at JAMK

The opening ceremony of the boiler testing laboratory at the Bioenergy Development Centre of the JAMK University of Applied Science on 14th February was dignified by the presence of more than one hundred experts in the field. The laboratory located in Saarijärvi is, by its magnitude, unique in the whole of Finland.

Mainly fuels and heating systems using solid fuels are tested and investigated in the laboratory. It provides a service to equipment manufacturers, fuel producers, research institutes and educational institutes. In the laboratory it is possible to investigate for example the operation, with different fuels, of a heating system as well as usability and safety of heating systems. There is also a fuel dryer that can be used to produce a desired kind of fuel for testing.

The research facility - costing nearly a million euros - produces, for equipment manufacturers and researchers, information with which the usability, energy efficiency and environmental friendliness of the equipment is improved. The laboratory combines the resources and strengths of research institutes and companies. With this, the development of the industry and research in the field is ensured.

In the planning of the testing laboratory it was aimed to testing in accordance with the EN 303-5 standard. At the moment, the standard reaches the 300 kW efficiency class.

A pan-European standard for heating boilers that is under preparation will be applicable up to 500 kW. In the new laboratory, measurements and testing runs for boilers of up to 1000 kW can be performed.

In addition to JAMK's President Jussi Halttunen and the Head of the Bioenergy Development Centre Pekka Äänismaa, the speakers at the event were Mauri Pekkarinen, the Minister of Economic Affairs, and Antti Ala-Talkkari, the Managing Director of Veljekset Ala-Talkkari.

International mobility at JAMK University of Applied Sciences was active in 2010

International operation is active at JAMK University of Applied Sciences (JAMK), which is demonstrated by the annually collected statistics of international mobility. Students go abroad to do studies or practical training as a part of their degree, to take part in an international project or to compile their thesis for an international enterprise/organization. Respectively, students from foreign partner institutions arrive to JAMK to develop their own professional skills, all the while internationalising the community of our higher education institution and Central Finland as well. A considerable part of staff participates yearly in staff mobility abroad, which can include e.g. teaching in a partner institution or operating within R&D projects. Also, foreign teachers and experts arrive to JAMK every year for different assignments and tasks, bringing their own expertise into the cooperation.

In total 240 students went abroad for a period of over three months, about half of them to do studies for their degree and about half to do a practical training. The amount increased by 6,6 per cent compared to the year 2009. 248 students participated in short, approximately 1-2 week long periods abroad, such as Study Tours, which is double the amount of the previous year. Respectively, 197 international students and 28 practical trainees came to JAMK for one or two semesters and 172 international students came to JAMK for shorter periods. Student mobility in long-term periods abroad was most active in the educational fields of Social sciences, business and administration, Technology, communication and transport as well as Tourism, catering and domestic services. Student mobility was performed mostly within the Erasmus programme.

Staff mobility within teaching and expert tasks was also active. In total 97 staff members of JAMK visited partner institutions abroad with teaching purposes. Furthermore, 214 experts travelled abroad for education, R&D and corporate cooperation purposes. The total amount of staff mobility abroad increased by 6,5 per cent. Respectively, 148 foreign teachers and experts from partner institutions and organizations abroad came to JAMK during 2010.

The most popular target countries for students and staff were Germany, Russia, Great Britain, Sweden and Belgium. The most students, teachers and experts came to JAMK from Spain, Germany, Russia, the Netherlands and Austria. 53 per cent of participants in international mobility were female.

Application to the Degree Programmes Conducted in English: JAMK Among the Most Popular

Application period to the degree programmes conducted in English ended on Tuesday 15th February. JAMK maintained its third-place ranking according to the number of first-choice applicants. When the attraction factors were compared, JAMK was ranked sixth. In Finland, 24 universities of applied sciences offer degree programmes in English.

The exact number of applicants has yet to be confirmed. However, according to the preliminary estimates JAMK had over 5500 applicants of which over 1670 had JAMK as their first-choice.

This year, the annual intake quota has increased from 190 to 210 places. Ten places were added to the Degree Programmes of Nursing and Logistics Engineering. In the assessment of attraction-factors, JAMK reached grade 8,0, while the average among Finnish universities of applied sciences was 5,9.

In total, JAMK offers five degree programs in English: Nursing, Facility Management, Logistics Engineering, International Business and Music and Media Management.

JAMK Teacher Education College Popular Among Applicants

JAMK Teacher Education College had a total of 1395 applicants. 1091 of them applied for the Vocational Teacher Education, 173 for Vocational Special Needs Teacher Education and 131 for Study Counsellor Education. 448 applicants will be granted admission.

In Finland, there are five teacher education colleges: in Jyväskylä, Helsinki, Tampere, Hämeenlinna and Oulu. Similarly as last year, Jyväskylä was again the most popular when it comes to the total number of applicants.

-We offer multi-mode education which is based on online studies. This is convenient for the working population, says Harri Keurulainen, Head of Department.

Vocational teacher education is a valid pedagogical education on all levels of educational institutes and universities. The education constitutes of 60 ECTS credits which can be completed in 1-2 years.

EFMD Membership to School of Business and Services Management

JAMK School of Business and Services Management has been granted membership of EFMD, an international management development network.

EFMD is a globally recognised accreditation organisation for management education. As an EFMD member, JAMK School of Business and Services Management can now apply for EPAS accreditation for its degree programmes.

JAMK is the first Finnish University that has been granted the membership. For a membership, recommendations of two existing member organisations are required. Membership can be granted for schools and corporations.

Vulcanus in Japan 2011-2012 - Practical Placement in Japan

The "Vulcanus in Japan" programme through the European Universities is currently been re-launched. The Vulcanus programme offers industrial placements in Japanese host companies to European students in engineering (or similar).

At the time of application, you must be both:

-an EU citizen
-a student of engineering or science in at least the third year of a course at an EU University (Computer science, science engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical, electronics, biotechnology, electrical engineering, physics, telecommunication, nuclear engineering, civil engineering, metal materials, ceramics, production system,…)

In accordance with the regulations of their respective universities, the students will be either undergraduates or postgraduate students who are able to take a year out - as a recognised part of their course or as a year off - or postgraduates.

JAMK University of Applied Sciences continues to strengthen its role as an adult education provider

Apprenticeship-based higher education expands in Central Finland. The Ministry of Education and Culture has granted JAMK University of Applied Sciences and the University of Jyväskylä permission to implement five new apprenticeship-based professional continuing education programmes. Both JAMK and the University of Jyväskylä were very successful in the national application process.

Apprenticeship-based professional continuing education is a new form of education for working professionals with higher education degrees. In spring 2010, the Ministry of Education and Culture received a total of 89 applications to implement apprenticeship-based professional continuing education programmes, 30 from universities and 59 from universities of applied sciences. The Ministry of Education granted permission to implement a total of 33 programmes, 14 in universities and 19 in universities of applied sciences.

JAMK was extremely successful in the competition. Four out of six JAMK’s applications were approved: Value Chain Developer, Innovation Process and Immaterial Rights Management, Rural Area Waste Water Expert, and Sexual Counsellor. All the programmes are worth 30 credits, and they will start in autumn 2010. JAMK will also participate as a partner in two other programmes: Load Security (Turku University of Applied Sciences) and Gerontological Nursing (University of Turku).

The new programmes will enhance JAMK’s position as an adult higher education provider both at regional and national levels. The University of Jyväskylä was granted permission to implement the professional continuing education programme in international corporate communication for which it had submitted an application.

JAMK University of Applied Sciences Scored High in Image Survey

JAMK University of Applied Sciences was again among the top three in the image survey conducted by Taloustukimus Oy on Finnish higher education institutions in March 2010. The questionnaire was answered by more than 1500 17-29 year old young adults living in Finland.

The respondents were asked to assess the universities of applied sciences they knew by using a 4-10 scale. JAMK’s overall score was 7.66, which is an extremely good result at the national level. This year, the universities of applied sciences were assessed more critically than before: A total of 23 universities of applied sciences received a lower score than the year before, and 18 received the lowest score in five years. Contrary to the general trend, JAMK improved its result. JAMK was ranked first (overall score 8.13) by young adults living in eastern Finland.

The most significant image factor was the location. The respondents regarded Jyväskylä as an attractive place to live and study. In addition to its location, JAMK also scored high as a modern and international learning environment.

JAMK ranked third in terms of attractiveness as a place to study. Young people who live in eastern and western Finland were especially interested studying at JAMK. The most important criterion for choosing a place to study was whether the potential educational institute would provide education in the field that interested the respondents. The quality of teaching and research was mentioned as the second most important criterion. Social and Health Care was the most popular field among the female respondents, and technology and transport among the male respondents.

the volcanic eruption in Iceland and the impact it has had on traveling have been noted also in Finland. In case you are trying to return to Finland from your study/practical training period abroad, but the situation is causing delays etc., please contact both your family and also the International Coordinator of your School. If needed you can also contact us at the International Services. Or in case you are trying to leave Finland to start your exchange/practical training period abroad, please remember to contact your host institution and let them know the delays in your traveling. Remember to also inform them as soon as you are able to travel.

Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland follows the situation closely and posts the latest updates and information on the air traffic on their website.

Mr. Carlos Villamar, an attorney specializing in high technology intellectual property law, will present a lecture on Friday, April 9th, at JAMK University of Applied Sciences at 10 am in auditorium FP05, located on the main campus on Rajakatu 35 in Jyväskylä. The lecture is open to the public.

Mr. Villamar’s presentation, titled "Intellectual Property (IP) Protection in the Digital Age: What every firm and university should know to maximize IP and minimize costs," will focus on the importance of developing a global strategy for intellectual property protection. Mr. Villamar is a founding partner of The Villamar Firm PLLC, located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and where he assists clients with foreign and domestic patent application preparation and prosecution, opinion work, litigation, and IP counseling.

Erasmus program extending to include foreign staff members and degree program students

From the beginning of the academic year 2010 - 11 forward the Erasmus program extends to cover all students of higher education institutions regardless of nationality. It means that also foreign degree students can participate in the Erasmus programme and acquire an Erasmus grant from the EU funds. Previously the Erasmus student and trainee exchange in Finland has been available only to Finnish citizens, citizens of other countries participating in the Erasmus programme and individuals, who have a permanent residence permit in Finland.

In addition to students, the extension covers also members of staff at higher education institutions, who can participate in Erasmus teacher and staff mobility regardless of nationality. Also the EILC - Erasmus Intensive Language Courses will become available to all students and staff at higher education institutions regardless of nationality.

International Business attracted the most applicants

The application period for JAMK's degree programmes conducted in English closed last Friday. The total number of applicants who chose JAMK as their first preference was 1420. The Degree Programme in International Business, which offers an opportunity to specialise in High-Tech Management, was the most sought after programme.
The second most popular programme was the Degree Programme in Nursing, which leads to the Degree of Bachelor in Nursing. JAMK’s other international degree programmes are Music and Media Management, Logistics Engineering, and Facility Management. The total number of places in these five programmes is 190. Apart from Finland, applications for these degree programmes were received from e.g. Russia, Vietnam and Bangladesh. The degrees represent 210-240 credits and take an average of 3½ - 4 years to complete.

All eligible applicants will be invited to participate in the entrance examinations. Invitations will be mailed from 12 March 2010 onwards. Entrance examinations will be organised both in Finland and abroad between 1 April and 7 May. The results of the student selections will be published on 28 May at the earliest.

Joint application for programmes conducted in Finnish will start on 1 March 2010.

Application Announcement: International Services’ Freemover scholarship for students is available for applying at JAMK University of Applied Sciences until March 15, 2010.

International Services of JAMK University of Applied Sciences declares the Freemover scholarship for international student exchange available for applying. It is intended for students who apply independently for an exchange place at a higher education institution that charges tuition fees. Degree students from all fields at JAMK University of Applied Sciences who have completed at least two years of their studies can apply for the scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to a student who has been successful in his/her studies (number of credits, average grade of study attainments) and has adequate language skills. The studies at the receiving institution also need to have significance to the student’s degree and professional growth. The scholarship is worth 5000€ at the most and it is awarded for tuition fees to such a higher education institution that does not have an exchange agreement with JAMK University of Applied Sciences and where students pay tuition fees. In case the tuition fees of the receiving institution amount to less than 5000€, the scholarship is paid in the amount of the tuition fee.

The scholarship is applied with an application form (word, 64 KB). Also, a transcript of records and a letter of assessment from a departmental representative are needed. The letter should deal with the objectives and the expected outcome of the exchange as well as the reasons why an exchange in that particular institution is important to the student’s degree and professional growth. The application form can be found at International Services, with International Coordinators of the schools and in OPTIMA (Study Forum – Internationality through studies).

Application and attachments are to be delivered to International Services by 4 pm on March 15, 2010 at the latest. The address is:

Become an International Student Tutor!

Over two hundred exchange students arrive at JAMK University of Applied Sciences every year, 150 of them in August. The international tutors of JAMK, trained by the student union JAMKO, are in charge of providing peer counselling to the exchange students.

The tasks of the international tutors include, for example, contacting the exchange students before they arrive, helping them with arrangements and meeting them on arrival, and introducing them to their new home town and study environment. While acting as international tutors, the students of JAMK complete the International Student Tutoring course, worth 5 ECTS credits.

In order to act as international tutors, the students of JAMK participate in a special training preparing them for international tutoring. The next two-day training will take place on 6 April (from 16.00 to 20.00) and 17 April from 12.00 to 16.00. The training will be provided in English. All the degree students of JAMK can participate in the training. Please register for the training by 1 April 2009. You can do it online here.

Student tutors (peer tutors) help new students settle down in the study environment and get started with their studies. Student tutors have practical information, knowledge, know-how and experiences that can help newcomers with the questions that they have at the beginning of their studies and also later on.

As a student tutor, you can develop your presentation and problem solving skills and your ability to get along with different kinds of people.

The Student Union (JAMKO) is responsible for organizing the student tutor activities at the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences. JAMKO also recruits and trains the student tutors. The application period for new student tutors is open until 14 January 2009. All the applicants will be interviewed in week 4 (starting on 19 January).

A New Offering of Elective Courses

In the autumn of 2007, the Synergy Group assigned a work group to revise JUA’s offering of elective studies. This was done because JUA is adopting new competence- and learning-based curricula and courses consisting of a minimum of 5 credits, in compliance with the ECTS.

The work group included the heads of various degree programmes and representatives of the student union. The group compiled a list of suggested elective courses based on the experiences of previous offerings and on new ideas provided by JUA’s schools. All the schools identified the courses on the list which they thought would best support students’ professional growth and “learning to learn”.

All the courses which were identified by at least two schools were included in the interdisciplinary, synergistically implemented palette of elective courses. This is one of the options which students have when choosing elective courses for their personal study plans. In addition, they can support their career plans with courses selected from the entire course offering of JUA (as long as schedules and other arrangements permit), the offering of the Online University of Applied Sciences or other university-level courses.

IB Students awarded at a Student Conference in Obninsk

Six degree students and four exchange students from the Degree Programme in International Business (IB) received awards for their presentations at the 6th "Business and Politics in a Changing World" student conference in Obninsk, Russia April 17-19, 2008. Also four students received awards for the best stands for the country fair exhibition.

Since 1998, the conference has been jointly organized by the French-Russian Institute of Business Administration (FRIDAS) from Obninsk, The State University of Management in Moscow and Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (JUA). This year there were 226 students participating in the conference including 33 students from JUA.
